As a group of 5, LJ Designs strives to produce a community that recruits first-rate students to campus, reflecting Stephen F. Austin State University’s prioritization of student enrollment. Creating multiple building designs that focus on a “Global Community” and bringing the people of Nacogdoches, and surrounding cities together, is our main objective. Our goals can be achieved by putting our student’s and staff’s needs and preferences first by renovating the current Hall 14 residence hall and tearing down and reconstructing both Hall 16 and The EC dining hall as one. Our design allows Stephen F. Austin State University’s historic elements and traditions to continue on, in a new and effective manner through ample amounts of greenbelts, circulation, amenities, modern finishes and furniture and sustainability throughout.

Original Site
The Community Plan is a proposed venture that will offer a modernized design plan for the Northeast portion of the
SFASU campus that involves the current Hall 14, Hall 16, and the EC dining hall. This plan is driven by affordability, community and experiential quality for all students, staff and guests. The overall site presents the newly renovated Hall 14, now Scott A. Gordon Hall, and the newly conjoined Hall 16 and EC dining hall, now known as The Community.
Phase 1
Renovation
Transform Hall #14 into the newly renovated
"Scott A. Gordan Hall"
Phase 2
New Construction
Tear down Hall #16
Rebuild Hall #16 to include the new Dining Hall. Now known as
"The Community"
Phase 3
Site Reconstruction
Tear down E.C. Dining Hall
Rebuild into the
"SFA Plaza"
Site Considerations
- Vehicular and Pedestrian traffic becomes clogged and can be a safety hazard, especially on game days when hundreds of students and guests are attending and leaving football games.
- Walking paths are only 48” and are too small for the quantity of people on campus.
- There are a limited amount of walking paths through this area.
- Circulation flows around the EC dining hall forcing students to take a long path around the building or through the loading dock to main campus.
- The EC Dining hall obstructs the view from one residence hall to the other causing a divide in student collaboration.
New Site
Site Alterations
- Hall 14 has been renovated and renamed Scott A. Gordon Hall to commemorate the current SFA President.
- Hall 16 has been torn down and reconstructed in combination with the new EC dining hall. Now known as The Community.
- The original EC Dining hall will be removed and the site will be reconstructed into the SFA Plaza creating a sense of community
- Implement 15 & 20 feet of sidewalks allowing utility and emergency vehicles to have access to any building in the SFA Plaza
- Paths will be lined with new light posts and security posts to provide a secure and welcoming environment.
- Provide a food truck area for weekend events, student functions and football games.
- The removal of East College street has provided commuters two new round-about on the west and east entrances.
- The loading dock will be moved so the student body and guests will not see the loading docks.

Furniture Plans
Within the Community Plan, the original Hall 14 was renovated and converted into the new Scott A, Gordon Hall. Scott A. Gordon Hall is a 4 story communal style residence hall located on the Northeast section of SFASU campus. As a renovation, LJ Designs planned to use additive design and build out a large central lobby and 4 story gathering areas on either wing to influence a community feel throughout. With ample amenities, fresh new finishes, and 398 beds Scott A. Gordon Hall has become a fun and functional hall for all residents, staff and guests.

The Third and Fourth floor of The Community are duplicates to create a consistency within. The wings of each floor are bookmatched with the identical dorm layouts, finishes and amenities similar to the right wing of the second floor below. The Community residence hall encompasses the concept of community and is portrayed through the dorm room layouts. Suite style dorm room layouts allow students to have a level of privacy that is not provided in a communal residence hall. With private restrooms (1 per 4 students or 1 per 2 students in an ADA suite) they have the ability to have a closer bond with their suitemates and feel more comfortable and secure in their home environment.
